December 6, 1929 the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation was established. Later the name was changed to Grumman Aircraft Aerospace. This aircraft company was a leader in producing military and civilian planes. Plus Grumman was the top contractor for the Apollo Lunar Module, which landed men on the moon. All together they built 13 Lunar Modules.

In the early twenties a man named Leory Grumman started his own business welding aluminum tubing for trucks. Later his company got a contract with the US Navy and was able to design a practical float with retractable landing gear. This was what got Grumman into the business of building aircraft. Their first aircraft was the Grumman FF-1 biplane with retractable landing gear.
