Tadpoles and Polliwogs for Sale Bullfrog Tadpole

Tadpoles are young frogs that live in water. There are several names for them. I always used pollywog as a child. Names include tadpole, polliwog, pollywog, polliwig, polwig, or purwiggy, pollywiggle, polliwiggle, polwiggle, or porwiggle. Most of these names I never even heard of.

During the tadpole stage they swim like a fish with gills and a tail. As the tadpole grows, legs usually appear first then the arms.

The tail is slowly absorbed and lungs develop. The last development is when the small round mouth changes into a larger mouth the width of it s head.

Most tadpoles eat alga and plants. As the tadpole grows and changes their intestines become shorter and transform to enable the young frog to eat insects.

American bullfrogs are found in much of North America during warm weather. They grow to between 3 - 6 inches in body length and there are some records of them growing as big as 8 inches. You can find Bullfrog Tadpoles for sale (below) too.

I always loved to raise these baby frogs. I would put them in some container where they could move around and feed them oatmeal. Now I read that they usually eat algae and small plants. Some also eat anything they find on the bottom that might be edible so I guess oatmeal worked out ok for them. The downside to oatmeal was that it would cloudy the water so the water had to be changed quite often.

It was fun raising them until they could fend on there own and let them loose in some near by pond. From what I have heard it isn't always a good thing to raise bullfrogs and release them in the wild. If your area doesn't already have them they tend to eat smaller frogs and may harm the local wild frogs in your area.

Many frogs are disappearing and there are projects to capture and raise the endangered ones to release later. This might be a great home project for the endangered frogs in your area. Do some research and learn how to raise them successfully before doing so. You want to preserve as many as possible. Also check into the local laws. It may be illegal to capture them even if you are helping.

You and your kids will love to grow a frog. Find different types of tadpoles and polliwogs on this page.

The tadpoles in this photo are probably baby bullfrogs. Frogs are fascinating creatures. They start out like a fish and then grow legs while their tail disappears.
Then their mouth widens and lungs develop and they come out of the water and breath air.

When I was a child I always called them polliwogs. The spelling is different on this word and can be spelled pollywog or polliwig. I don’t know which pronunciation I used but now just call them by their normal name.

The pollywogs in the photo above are probably tree frogs. These will grow up and add music to your night as they sing among the trees.

The tiny polliwigs usually eat alga and any plants they find in the water. As a child I would catch them and feed them oatmeal. This seemed to work well for them but did cloud the water so that I had to change the water often. There is food you can purchase here from Amazon that should not cloud their environment and may have more nutrients for your baby frog then oatmeal.

Some frogs are becoming endangered and it would be fun to know which ones they are and raise them in the safety of my home before releasing them out doors. This would give them a head start as other creatures in the wild may eat them before they have a change to grow up.

These tadpoles in the photo above look like bullfrogs. When I see them in the water I always have the urge, even today, to catch them and put them in a fish tank so I can watch them grow.

I would make sure there was rocks that they could climb on to and get out of the water, and then I would release them quickly once they were ready so they could eat the insects that they need to stay healthy.

Bullfrogs usually grow between three to eight inches and can be found in most parts of the United States. Care needs to be taken to release them in places that already have them.

Otherwise they could wipe out the local frog population because they will eat whatever they can catch. With many species of frogs disappearing you don’t want to contribute to that.
