These cute dolls are unique cloth toys that are two dolls in one. When these collectible dolls are flipped around, another that was hidden is now displayed in a different outfit.
These are American folk dolls which usually featured both an African American and white girl. The reversible "Mammy" had a mammy and a white girl child.
There is little information on their history. In the 1950s they became a popular rag doll when sold in retail stores like Montgomery Wards and Sears.
Little is known about the origins of this unique toy. Some of the antique versions were made to tell a story and others were soft cloth dolls used by African American children who wanted a white doll.
These unique dolls won the "Creative Child Magazine Preferred Choice and Toy Tips Trusted" Award. These dolls are usually about 10"-12" tall.

Another theory is that this double sided doll was an inexpensive way to own two rag dolls that were completely different. These dolls also taught children about a different culture. Some of the topsy- turvy dolls had one doll that was awake and when reversed the other doll was asleep.The original collectible cloth dolls are rare to find because many were handmade cloth dolls that were well used by their owners. The material that was used to make these unique dolls was usually left over fabric or clothing that was no longer useful. The inside was stuffed with old socks or clothes.
I have several antique booths where I sell a number of items including these fun unique old time dolls. Everyone always enjoy flipping them around to see what is hidden. I always find that the doll I have displayed is turned the opposite way each time I visit my booth.
The older primitive versions are becoming more difficult to find due to the materials that they were made from. Some were made from scraps of material that was already worn and filled with dried plants or more worn out material. The ones that have survived can command a very high price. I personally have never seen any other than on line that are for sale. I am always grateful for the internet that we can now have more access to rare and hard to find items.

We seem to be in a generation that has more of an interest in computers and electronics. However there has been an interest in the last few years among doll collectors because of the rarity of the older dolls.
